Nacogdoches 101 (Community)

Have you ever found yourself wondering about the rules, regulations and various workings of the city? Perhaps you criticize because you’re wondering how city government works? Or what really happens at City Hall and most importantly what is happening to your tax dollars? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions then this is your opportunity to have those questions answered. Here is your chance as a citizen to get an all access pass to behind scenes of city government. The City of Nacogdoches will be hosting Nac 101, a unique opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of how this city really works and how it can work for you. Citizens enrolled in the program will learn about various City departments, volunteerism, the City Council, City Manager, the city budget and many other topics. You will get to hear presentations from hardworking city employees like Fire Chief Keith Kiplinger, Police Chief Jim Sevey, City Planner Larissa Philpot, City Librarian Anne Barker and many more from almost every city department.
The Nac 101 classes will be held every 2nd and 4th Thursday beginning at 6:00 pm on 28 January 2010. There will be 7 classes total and each class will be 2 hours long. Classes are free and they are open to all citizens over the age of 18. Each class will cater to different departments such as Inspections, Public Works, or Municipal Court and will allow you to gain a more in depth understanding of how your city operates on a day-to-day basis. Understanding how your city operates not only makes you a better ambassador for Nacogdoches, it can also give you a peace of mind and reassurance that you are in good hands. According to Mayor Roger Van Horn “If citizens are well informed about the process of governance in Nacogdoches and willing to get involved they become a part of the solution to the challenges our city faces.” Participation in this workshop may also leave you wanting more, so why not become more involved, especially now that you know a little more about how the city works? The sessions will cover how to become more involved in the city government whether it is through volunteerism or becoming a member of one of the city boards such as the Planning and Zoning Commission or the Historic Landmark Preservation Committee.
Applications are currently available in the City Secretaries office at City Hall or on the City of Nacogdoches website. The applications need to be turned in to the City Secretaries office at City Hall by 12 January 2010.
