With all its ups and downs, 2020 has been a year of postponed events and limited celebrations. One of the biggest disappointments was the cancellation of the United Way’s annual Christmas Parade. However, there is an old community tradition we at the Visit Nacogdoches office believe everyone can enjoy, participate in, and support this holiday season.
Longtime resident and SFA professor Bert Rees loved all things Christmas. Growing up in the Rees house meant decked out Holiday décor both inside and out. He loved it so much he and his family created the Bert Rees Lighting Contest to spread Christmas cheer throughout the town.
Now in its tenth year, the contest has seen a decline in participation. However, the elves at Visit Nac have seen an increase in folks putting out lights! We propose ‘flipping the switch’ this year and injecting new life into the Bert Reese Lighting Contest. The expansion of categories makes it possible for all to participate. Let us all celebrate the joy of the Christmas season and be like Bert! Help us light up Nacogdoches for us all to enjoy.
